Nub Tshonapata Trek

For those drawn to Bhutan's wilder frontiers, the Nub Tshonapata Trek offers a breathtaking journey into the untouched highlands of Haa.

The journey takes you through one of Bhutan's most secluded highland regions. Beginning near Kajena Village (2,750m), the trail ascends through pine forests and hillside monasteries, gaining altitude and awe in equal measure. Campsites like Tshokam and Womji offer peaceful nights beneath starlit skies, surrounded by whispering firs and rhododendrons.

Each day unfolds with new terrain—meadows at Yulo; panoramic Himalayan passes like Tale La (3,780m) and Gonchu La (4,194m), and ancient yak herder camps tucked into wild ridgelines. The trail weaves past Tsebjo La and continues to the sacred lake of Nub Tshonapata, located at 4,076 meters. Legend holds this shimmering lake as a place of blessings, where the silence feels holy and timeless.

Flora includes rhododendrons, dwarf bamboo, and silver fir; the trail is painted in seasonal colors. With clear skies, trekkers are treated to sweeping views of the Haa Valley, Jomolhari, and even distant Kanchenjunga.

It is a moderate to challenging trek with sustained elevation and rugged trails. It's best undertaken from May to early October.

To round out your experience, add 5–6 days exploring Paro, Haa, or Thimphu. A visit to Tiger's Nest is a perfect ending to this mountain odyssey.

Nub Tshonapata isn't just a trek—it's a remote and reverent walk through Bhutan's alpine heart.
