Winding through a landscape untouched by time, the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek invites travelers into Bhutan's high-altitude sanctuary—a world of mirror-like lakes, wildflower meadows, and distant Himalayan giants. Starting from the peaceful village of Gynekha, the six-day journey climbs gradually through rhododendron forests and yak pastures, alive with the sounds of alpine birds.
As you ascend toward Gur and cross high ridges on the way to Labatama, the terrain opens up to sweeping views of snowcapped peaks. On clear days, you'll glimpse Kanchenjunga, Jomolhari, and even Everest shimmering on the horizon—camp beside Uthso Tsho, where silence is broken only by the wind brushing across still waters.
The trek's middle section, from Labatama to Panka, is its most enchanting—dotted with jewel-like glacial lakes and herder camps, where yaks graze against a backdrop of distant summits. Though rated moderate, sections like the climb to Labatama require steady footing and acclimatization.
The final stretch leads through the sacred Tale La pass before descending into Thimphu's forested outskirts. It's a fitting finale—a gentle return from solitude to the pulse of Bhutan's capital.
The trail is best hiked from April to early June or late September to November. It is rich in flora—blue poppies, dwarf rhododendrons, and edelweiss bloom beneath the open sky.
Add 4–5 days to explore Thimphu, Punakha, or Paro, or include a day hike to Tiger's Nest for a perfect end. The Dagala Trek isn't just scenic—it's soul-stirring.
