Lungchutse Hike

Starting from the iconic Dochula Pass at 3,100 meters (10,170 feet), the Lungchutse hike is one of Bhutan's most rewarding half-day treks. The trail weaves through dense forests of pine, hemlock, and rhododendron, gradually ascending to a quiet ridge where the Lungchutse Temple stands at 3,560 meters (11,680 feet)—a serene destination blessed with 360-degree views of the eastern Himalayas.

The Hike is a moderate trek with steady ascents through high-altitude forest, suitable for reasonably fit hikers acclimating to Bhutan's elevation.

The hike covers around 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) one way, taking 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and the weather. It's moderately challenging but suitable for hikers with average fitness. Along the way, you'll find fluttering prayer flags, moss-covered trees, and, with a bit of luck, sightings of Himalayan bird species like the blood pheasant or laughing thrush.

What makes this hike especially meaningful isn't just the scenery—the sense of calm grows with every step. The air grows quieter, and the forest feels untouched. Occasionally, you might cross paths with a local herder or monk, grounding the experience in Bhutanese culture.

At the summit, the Lungchutse Temple feels otherworldly, often shrouded in mist and sometimes opening up to vast Himalayan panoramas. You'll want to pause here, breathe deeply, and absorb the silence.

This hike isn't about speed. It's about connection to nature, spirit, and the stories that live in Bhutan's high places.
