The Wangditse hiking trail offers a quiet and reflective walk through one of Thimphu's most scenic ridgelines. Starting from the BBS Tower, a popular viewpoint overlooking the city, the trail extends about 4 kilometres to the historic Wangditse Lhakhang. Most walkers complete the round-trip journey in 2 to 3 hours, depending on their pace and the number of stops they make.
The Wangditse Hike is an easy trail suitable for all fitness levels. At an altitude of 2,500 meters, the trail passes through a serene mix of blue pine and oak forests, where filtered sunlight flickers through the branches. The air is crisp and cool, scented with pine resin, and filled with the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. Prayer flags stretch across the path along the way, sending quiet wishes across the valley.
On clear days, the Thimphu Valley comes into full view, and the far-off Himalayan peaks draw the eye toward snow-lined horizons. The trail has a gentle incline, making it suitable for most hikers with moderate fitness.
As you approach Wangditse Lhakhang, the white walls of the monastery appear through the treetops. From here, glimpses of the Buddha Dordenma statue and Dechen Phodrang Monastery can be seen in the distance—symbols of faith standing against Bhutan's mountainous backdrop.
This walk is more than a nature trail; it's a moment of pause, offering a peaceful space to reconnect with nature, culture, and yourself.
