Red Panda Brewery and Swiss Cheese

The Red Panda Brewery and Swiss Cheese Factory is nestled in Bumthang Valley, Bhutan. Established in 1996 by Swiss national Fritz Maurer, it combines traditional European crafts with local resources. Maurer's vision was to create locally produced cheese and beer for Bhutanese citizens and tourists. The distinctive architecture of the brewery and factory complements the mountain backdrop. Inside, copper vats bubble with fermenting beer, and the aroma of barley fills the air. Workers efficiently manage the brewing process, contributing to the local economy and culture.

The brewery's pale yellow hefeweizen, a signature beer, showcases years of recipe refinement. Nearby, Gouda and other cheeses are aged on wooden shelves and crafted using Swiss techniques. These products are popular in Bhutan, featured in restaurants and delivered across the kingdom.

Visitors can join guided tours through the facilities, learning about brewing and cheesemaking. The tour ends with a tasting session that offers cheese and beer samples and views of Tang Valley. A shop sells on-site products, wrapping cheese and packaging beer for travelers.

The facility emphasizes environmental stewardship, drawing water from mountain springs and sourcing barley and milk locally. Solar panels and composting reflect Bhutan's philosophy of harmony with nature. Visitors should check opening hours, as the brewery may close for religious holidays or ingredient availability.
