Punakha Valley offers two unforgettable rafting experiences—one wild and thrilling and the other calm and scenic—each revealing a different side of Bhutan's natural beauty.
The Pho Chhu River is for thrill-seekers. Launching from Samdingkha Bridge, this Class II–III+ whitewater stretch winds through stunning mountain scenery with rapids that keep your paddle moving. You'll pass under several bridges—including Bhutan's longest suspension bridge—before ending at the river confluence. With flows between 2,000 and 3,000 cfs, it's an exciting year-round experience, best suited for those seeking a heart-pounding ride with panoramic views.
Would you prefer a gentler float? The Mo Chhu River offers a serene 10 km ride from Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten to Changyul Village. Class I–II rapids and an 800–1000 cfs flow make it perfect for families and first-time rafters. Between October and April, migratory species will delight birdwatchers, and a glimpse of the royal palace adds a regal touch to the journey.
Both trips run from January until June and from mid-September until December. They accommodate up to 6 adults per raft and are private, without sharing with other groups. Children above 5 are welcome on Mo Chhu. For those wanting more, riverside camping can be arranged.
Whether you crave adrenaline or quiet immersion, rafting in Punakha lets you experience Bhutan from a fresh, unforgettable perspective—right from the water.
