Horse Riding

Discover Bhutan on horseback, just as herders, monks, and royals once did. From gentle valley circuits to adventurous highland trails, Bhutan's horse-riding experiences blend scenic beauty with cultural richness, making them perfect for beginners and seasoned riders.

In Phobjikha, ride along the Nature Trail, a 2-hour, easy circuit starting in Jangchey village. Pass pine forests and meadows where black-necked cranes roost in winter, with trotting and cantering opportunities along mostly flat trails.

Take the Mountain Trail to Lawala Pass (3,000m) through blooming rhododendron forests and quaint villages for a more challenging ride. This 4-hour ride offers panoramic views from high ridgelines and is best for intermediate to experienced riders.

Enjoy day rides to Ugyen Choling Palace or Tandingang Village in Bumthang. Routes weave through farmlands, forests, and traditional hamlets. All rides start with an arena introduction to ensure rider comfort and safety.

For the adventurous, embark on a 6-day Highland Riding Expedition across Tang Valley, Kunzangdrak, and Padselling Monastery. Ride past ancient temples, through alpine passes, and sleep under the stars or in homestays, experiencing Bhutan's highland culture up close.

Rides use English saddles, with helmets provided. Most horses range from 12 to 15 hands, and the weight limit is 85 kg. Trails vary from flat to mountainous, and rides are available in spring, early summer, autumn, and winter, when the best weather and blooms are available.
